ScioSense, a leader in sensor ICs and modules, has launched its latest ultrasonic flow sensing module, designed for ultra-low power consumption, making it ideal for battery-powered flow measurement and leak detection applications. Building on the success of its predecessor, the UFM-01, the new UFM-02 offers a complete, fully calibrated flow measurement unit, including a spool piece with standard pipe fittings, twin ultrasonic transducers, and a precision measurement circuit powered by ScioSense’s ultrasonic flow converter chip. The UFM-02 has been engineered for exceptional efficiency, with an average operating current of just 50µA, allowing the module to operate for several years on a single primary battery.
This new module is versatile and can be used in a wide range of applications, from consumer products to industrial systems, including water purifiers, water dispensers, coffee machines, smart toilets, irrigation systems, and swimming pools. In industrial settings, the UFM-02 is particularly useful for monitoring flow through filters, enabling replacement based on actual usage rather than fixed time intervals.
The UFM-02 module is available in two initial variants: a 0.5″ thread size with a 13.3mm inner diameter (ID) and a 1″ thread size with a 23.7mm ID. In addition, ScioSense plans to release future versions with thread sizes of 3/8″ (11.2mm ID) and 1.5″ (36.3mm ID) to accommodate a broader range of applications. The smallest variant supports flow rates up to 20 liters per minute, while the largest can handle flow rates up to 450 liters per minute, catering to both low and high-demand systems.
One of the standout features of the UFM-02 is its use of ultrasonic technology, which eliminates moving parts. This design offers significant advantages, such as enhanced reliability and a long operational lifespan without the risk of mechanical failure. Additionally, the sensor’s high sensitivity allows it to detect even the weakest flows, making it ideal for leak detection. For example, the 3/8″ thread variant can measure flow rates as low as 0.03 liters per minute, ensuring precise monitoring of very small flows.
For connectivity, the UFM-02 offers two cable options. The first is a four-wire pulse interface cable that provides a straightforward output signal, with up to 450 pulses per liter. The second option is a 10-wire SPI cable, which delivers detailed digital data, including the total liquid volume, filtered flow rate in liters per hour, and the temperature of the liquid being measured. These flexible connectivity options allow the UFM-02 to be integrated into a variety of systems, enhancing its versatility in different applications.
Andreas Blocherer, Senior Product Manager at ScioSense, commented: “The UFM-02 brings the power of ultrasonic flow sensing to a wide range of new applications, offering low-power operation with no need for external wiring. This makes it easier for manufacturers to integrate flow measurement and leak detection into their systems, adding value through enhanced efficiency and reliability.”
