Rolls-Royce Power Systems has secured one of the largest defence contracts in its history, with an order to supply approximately 200 mtu PowerPacks for the German Armed Forces’ Puma infantry fighting vehicles. The contract strengthens the company’s long-standing partnership with the Bundeswehr and reinforces its position as a key provider of advanced propulsion technologies for military platforms. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028.

At the heart of the system is the mtu 10V 890 engine, a compact yet powerful ten-cylinder unit delivering 800 kilowatts. The PowerPack integrates advanced power electronics, an optimized cooling system, and the RENK HSWL 256 transmission, forming a highly efficient and robust propulsion solution. Designed for demanding environments, the system also includes features such as a coarse dust blower to ensure reliable performance in extreme conditions.

The Puma infantry fighting vehicle, developed by Rheinmetall and KNDS, is considered one of the most advanced vehicles in its class. With approximately 350 units already in service, it combines high protection levels, advanced sensors, and strong mobility.

Dr Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said the contract reflects strong confidence in the company’s technology and industrial capabilities. He added that the order supports ongoing investments in production capacity, workforce expansion, and modern manufacturing facilities.

Knut Müller, Senior Vice President for Government Business, described the Puma’s propulsion system as highly advanced, emphasizing its compact design and high power density. He noted that the new PowerPacks will contribute significantly to operational readiness while supporting broader defence modernization efforts.

To meet growing demand, Rolls-Royce Power Systems is expanding its production infrastructure, including new manufacturing lines and enhanced technical capabilities. These investments aim to ensure reliable delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and performance. The contract highlights the increasing importance of scalable, proven technologies in strengthening defence capabilities across Europe and supporting next-generation military systems.
