Rolls-Royce and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have expanded their partnership to focus on hydrogen fuel technology for aviation. TCS will provide engineering expertise to help Rolls-Royce address challenges in hydrogen fuel combustion, delivery, and system integration with engines. This partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between Rolls-Royce and Tata Group, including various engineering and IT services.

TCS will support Rolls-Royce in system and component design, supply chain support, and program management. The goal is to develop safe and effective hydrogen fuel systems for aircraft. This collaboration aims to advance sustainable aviation technology.

Alan Newby, Director of Research and Technology at Rolls-Royce, said, “We welcome TCS to our hydrogen research program. Their engineering skills will help us meet our technology goals. We’ve made great progress, and having TCS with us adds to our capability as we work toward energy transition in aviation.”

The expanded partnership was announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, where TCS also showcased its aviation technology. This partnership builds on a long relationship between Rolls-Royce and the Tata Group, including engine production and a strong supply chain. TCS has been working with Rolls-Royce since 2010 in design, manufacturing, control systems, software, after-market services, and IT services. TCS has supported Rolls-Royce in major civil and business aviation programs and its product development lifecycle.

Anupam Singhal, President of Manufacturing at TCS, said, “Our partnership with Rolls-Royce is exciting and represents a strong alliance in the quest for sustainable aviation solutions. We share Rolls-Royce’s ambition for a greener future. This partnership is a perfect opportunity to use our technological strengths and passion for the environment to advance innovation and foster a more eco-friendly aerospace sector.”

TCS will use its deep knowledge of the aircraft manufacturing industry to support Rolls-Royce in system design, component design, supply chain support, and program management. These services will help Rolls-Royce research hydrogen technology, addressing key challenges in hydrogen use for aviation: fuel combustion, fuel delivery, and fuel systems integration with an engine. All elements must be confirmed to operate safely.

Regu Ayyaswamy, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Internet of Things and Digital Engineering at TCS, said, “TCS and Rolls-Royce have been partners in advancing engineering excellence for nearly a decade. The new partnership for hydrogen fuel systems research is a pivotal step at a time when the aviation industry must reduce carbon emissions while maintaining performance and efficiency. It aligns with TCS’s commitment to using technology for positive societal impact and building a greener future.”
