Phase noise analysis and VCO measurements now up to 50 GHz with the R&S FSPN50

Rohde & Schwarz has expanded the frequency range for measurements with its newest model of the R&S FSPN phase noise analyzer and VCO tester. This latest version now allows for measurements up to 50 GHz, a significant increase from the previous maximum of 26.5 GHz.

For 90 years, Rohde & Schwarz has been dedicated to creating a safer and more connected world through its Test & Measurement, Technology Systems, and Networks & Cybersecurity Divisions. As a global technology group, the company has continuously pushed the boundaries of innovation, delivering cutting-edge technologies that empower industrial, regulatory, and government customers to achieve technological and digital sovereignty.

Based in Munich and privately owned, Rohde & Schwarz operates independently and sustainably, ensuring long-term impact. In the fiscal year 2022/2023 (July to June), the company recorded a net revenue of EUR 2.78 billion. As of June 30, 2023, Rohde & Schwarz employed approximately 13,800 professionals worldwide.

Rohde & Schwarz has enhanced its R&S FSPN phase noise analyzer and VCO tester by focusing on functions specifically designed for phase noise analysis and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) measurements. This meticulous implementation ensures that all R&S FSPN models offer an exceptional price-to-performance ratio.

The R&S FSPN series delivers high-speed measurements and accuracy, making it ideal for characterizing sources like synthesizers, VCOs, OCXOs, and DROs. Users can select the most suitable setting for their application, balancing speed and accuracy, which makes the R&S FSPN suitable for both production testing and oscillator development needs.

The latest addition to the R&S FSPN series, the R&S FSPN50, extends the frequency range from 1 MHz to 50 GHz, complementing the existing 8 and 26.5 GHz models. This new model is particularly beneficial for engineers working on high-quality oscillators, as it supports applications in the Ka band from 26.5 to 40 GHz, the Q band from 36 to 46 GHz, and the lower V band up to 50 GHz.

Applications at these frequencies include commercial point-to-point wireless and microwave communication systems, satellite communications (including high throughput satellite services), military satellite and communication systems up to 50 GHz, close-range targeting radars, and the entire 5G FR2 frequency range from 21.84 GHz to 50.20 GHz.

The exceptional phase noise sensitivity of the R&S FSPN is achieved through the utilization of two low-noise internal local oscillators, which enable real-time cross-correlation. This feature allows users to adjust the number of correlations to either increase accuracy or enhance speed. The current cross-correlation sensitivity gain is displayed in real-time alongside the current result trace.

The analyzer separately and simultaneously measures phase noise and amplitude noise, providing comprehensive analysis of phase noise performance and facilitating the identification of any issues without compromising measurement speed. To ensure accurate VCO measurements, the R&S FSPN is equipped with three low-noise DC sources.

It can measure OCXO and DRO technologies, as well as VCOs. For seamless remote control and production automation, the analyzer can record sequences of SCPI commands automatically. The newly launched R&S FSPN50 phase noise analyzer and VCO tester, offering measurement capabilities up to 50 GHz, is now available from Rohde & Schwarz.
