Range Energy, a leader in electric-powered trailers for the commercial trucking sector, has announced a new partnership with ZF, a global technology supplier, to support the growth and adoption of its eTrailer System across North America. The collaboration will integrate ZF’s AxTrax 2 e-axle into Range’s system to meet the needs of commercial fleets, focusing on improving efficiency, cutting emissions, and extending driving range, all with the goal of advancing hybrid and zero-emission trucking.
“Electrified trailers present a powerful solution for reducing emissions in goods transport, enhancing fuel economy for combustion engine trucks, and extending the range of electric vehicles,” said John Hawkins, Senior Vice President of Commercial Vehicle Solutions at ZF. “With Range’s strong market presence, they were the clear partner for the AxTrax 2 e-axle in North America. This partnership gives us the chance to expand the application of our technology in a sector that faces significant environmental challenges.”
ZF is a key player in next-generation mobility, with innovations that are helping to extend the range of electric vehicles globally. In addition to supplying the e-axle, ZF will assist Range in building relationships with ecosystem partners, such as trailer and tractor OEMs, and component suppliers. Range’s eTrailer System combines a modular battery pack, ZF’s AxTrax 2 e-axle, and a smart kingpin, powered by Range’s proprietary control algorithms. Early trials show that the system could save up to $20,000 per trailer annually and reduce emissions by as much as 70%, all while utilizing existing fleet infrastructure.
The AxTrax 2 e-axle is a fully integrated system with a compact design that allows manufacturers greater flexibility in vehicle design and maximizes space for batteries. It is synchronized with key vehicle functions like braking, ADAS, and automated driving systems to enhance safety and efficiency, and it supports advanced digital systems via CAN bus for real-time data sharing.
“To meet emissions reduction targets, it’s crucial to get effective solutions into the hands of fleet operators quickly,” said Ali Javidan, CEO and Founder of Range Energy. “Working with ZF, a leader in the industry, we can rapidly advance our platform with proven components, demonstrating that electric trailers are key to reducing the environmental footprint of commercial trucking.”
Range’s eTrailer System is expected to begin customer deliveries later this year, with pre-production units already in customer pilot programs across North America. Range Energy, founded in 2021, aims to accelerate the transition to electric transportation in the heavy-duty trucking sector.
Their eTrailer System, which easily attaches to any tow vehicle, provides off-road mobile power and offers a rapid, practical solution for fleets moving toward electrification. The company is backed by top investors, including UP Partners, R7, and Yamaha Motor Ventures.
