Proterial Ltd, a global leader in advanced materials, has announced plans to invest about USD 80 million to set up India’s first manufacturing facility for amorphous metal material Metglas™ in Sri City, Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh. The new plant will support rising demand for energy-efficient transformer components in India and strengthen Proterial’s global supply network.

With electricity consumption increasing worldwide due to industrial growth, electrification and expansion of data centres, demand for high-efficiency transformers is growing rapidly. Metglas™, used as a core material in transformers, reduces standby power loss by nearly one-third compared with conventional electromagnetic steel sheets, improving overall power efficiency.

Proterial identified the energy-saving potential of amorphous metals decades ago and began research in the late 1970s. The company entered the Metglas™ business in 2003 after acquiring Metglas Inc. in South Carolina from Honeywell International. Large-scale production started in Japan in 2007, creating a two-site structure spanning the United States and Japan. The addition of an India plant will create a three-location manufacturing network to serve global demand.

India is expected to see strong growth in electricity consumption driven by population expansion, economic development and growth in the IT and manufacturing sectors. Alongside major investment in power infrastructure, demand for energy-efficient transformer materials is projected to rise sharply. The Sri City facility will mainly cater to domestic requirements while supporting export opportunities.

Amorphous metals differ from conventional metals in atomic structure. Rapid cooling from a molten state prevents atoms from forming a regular crystal pattern, producing a material with high magnetic efficiency. These properties make amorphous alloys well suited for transformer cores and magnetic components used in noise suppression and energy-saving applications.

Proterial currently supplies Metglas™ to India from its Japan operations. The new facility will expand production capacity, shorten supply chains and support customers in the region. Company officials said the investment reflects Proterial’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and long-term growth in India.

By strengthening local manufacturing and technology capabilities, the project is expected to support India’s energy-efficiency goals while contributing to global efforts to reduce power losses. Construction of the facility is expected to begin following regulatory approvals, with production planned after completion of the project.
