Plato, a Berlin-headquartered technology venture, has raised $14.5 million in seed funding to integrate generative AI into the wholesale distribution sector—an industry that underpins a substantial share of global trade yet remains largely underserved by modern software innovation. The funding round was led by Atomico, with participation from Cherry Ventures, Discovery Ventures and D11Z.
Wholesale distribution represents nearly one-fifth of global production flows, but many businesses in the sector continue to rely on legacy ERP platforms, spreadsheets and manual quotation processes. While artificial intelligence tools have gained widespread traction in marketing, customer support and software development, sales operations within distribution companies often remain heavily manual.
Plato’s approach centres on embedding AI directly into core operational systems rather than introducing standalone dashboards. The platform integrates with existing ERP infrastructure and converts historical sales data into automated workflows. It can highlight revenue opportunities, generate quotations and flag potential risks before they affect financial performance.
The concept emerged from firsthand experience. Co-founder Benedikt Nolte observed operational inefficiencies within his family’s distribution enterprise and recognised that conventional CRM platforms were not built to handle the complexity of wholesale operations. Plato was developed specifically for the structural realities of distribution businesses, rather than adapted from generic SaaS models.
Early adoption indicates growing industry interest, with the company reportedly securing six-figure agreements with several large distributors. This traction reflects a practical shift in AI implementation within traditional sectors, where measurable efficiency gains and revenue enhancement drive adoption.
The newly secured capital will support product expansion into procurement and customer service automation, while enabling geographic growth across additional European markets and, subsequently, the United States.
The investment also underscores a broader trend in AI funding: increasing focus on applying intelligence to foundational industries that have yet to undergo comprehensive digital transformation. By modernising wholesale distribution—a critical but often overlooked segment of the global economy—Plato aims to unlock operational efficiencies with far-reaching impact.
Plato is building an intuitive, AI-driven platform that automates ERP workflows for wholesale businesses. It gives customers a complete view of their sales performance, identifies new growth opportunities, and streamlines administrative tasks. Founded by Benedikt Nolte, Matthias Heinrich, and Oliver Birch, Plato partners with leading wholesalers to help modernize and future-proof the industry.
