Oil India Limited (OIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), a Saskatchewan-based not-for-profit energy research organization, have signed a collaboration framework aimed at advancing clean energy technologies, carbon management solutions and sustainable energy innovation. The agreement was formalized on the sidelines of the Global Energy Show 2026 in Calgary and reflects the growing commitment of India and Canada to strengthening cooperation in areas critical to the global energy transition.
Senior representatives from both organizations were present during the signing ceremony, alongside Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, India’s High Commissioner to Canada and other government and industry leaders. The collaboration will focus on developing and evaluating technologies that support lower-carbon energy systems and improved resource efficiency. A major area of cooperation will involve carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), including the permanent storage of captured carbon dioxide through geological sequestration and mineralization processes. These initiatives are expected to contribute to reducing industrial emissions while supporting long-term climate objectives.
The partnership will also explore advanced enhanced oil recovery techniques aimed at improving hydrocarbon recovery while minimizing environmental impact and reducing energy consumption. By combining research capabilities and industry expertise, the organizations aim to identify practical solutions that improve operational efficiency and sustainability.
Another key area of focus is geothermal energy. Both parties will work together to identify and assess geothermal opportunities that can support future clean energy development. Collaborative research efforts will also extend to subsurface energy production, underground storage technologies and emerging energy applications through PTRC’s Energy Innovation Hub.
The framework includes provisions for joint engagement with research institutions, industry stakeholders and innovation ecosystems in both countries. Through these networks, the organizations will evaluate new business opportunities and facilitate knowledge exchange across the energy sector.
In addition, the partnership will support innovation-led entrepreneurship through collaboration with mc2+, the startup platform established under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in India. This initiative is expected to create opportunities for emerging technology companies working on energy transition and sustainability solutions.
The agreement represents an important step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Canada in areas of strategic importance to the future of energy. By combining scientific research, industrial expertise and innovation ecosystems, OIL and PTRC aim to accelerate the development of technologies that support cleaner, more resilient and sustainable energy systems.
