Nirani Sugars, one of India’s largest privately-held sugar companies, has signed an MoU with the Government of Karnataka to establish a polylactic acid (PLA) manufacturing facility in Bagalkot. With an investment of ₹2,000 crore, the project will be developed over the next 3 to 5 years, creating 600–800 direct jobs in the region.
The Karnataka government has assured its support in securing approvals, permissions, and incentives, ensuring the project’s timely execution. PLA, a biodegradable and renewable polymer, is gaining popularity as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. Derived from natural sources like corn starch and sugarcane, it offers environmentally friendly solutions across multiple industries. Its biodegradability makes it ideal for reducing plastic waste, especially in compostable packaging such as food containers and wraps. Additionally, PLA is widely used in 3D printing, where it serves as a preferred filament due to its ease of use and minimal environmental impact.
Beyond packaging and manufacturing, PLA plays a crucial role in medical applications, including sutures and implants, thanks to its biocompatibility and safe degradation within the body. It is also making inroads into disposable tableware and automotive interiors, offering a greener alternative in industries seeking sustainability. Moreover, biodegradable electronic casings made from PLA are helping the tech industry transition toward more eco-conscious materials, further highlighting its versatility and impact. This initiative positions Karnataka as a leader in sustainable manufacturing, tackling environmental challenges such as plastic waste management and resource scarcity while meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly materials.
Vishal Nirani, Director, Nirani Sugars, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable growth, stating “We are excited to partner with the Government of Karnataka to bring cutting-edge PLA manufacturing to Bagalkot. This project is not just an investment in manufacturing but a commitment to Karnataka’s vision for a greener and more self-reliant future.”
He further highlighted the urgent need for alternatives to conventional plastics, which contribute to marine pollution, land degradation, and long-term environmental damage. “Karnataka, with its strong industrial ecosystem and progressive policies, is the ideal destination to spearhead this transformation. By producing biodegradable and renewable alternatives, we aim to contribute to India’s green economy while generating employment and economic opportunities.”
Nirani Sugars currently operates nine advanced sugar units across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Bihar, producing high-quality sugar and by-products that support the agriculture and energy sectors. The company aims to expand its portfolio by integrating high-value sustainable products, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility and industrial innovation.
