Musashi Auto Parts India Pvt Ltd, a leader in manufacturing transmission components for two and four-wheelers, has launched mass production of electric vehicle (EV) e-axles for two-wheelers at its facility in Bengaluru. This significant step marks a substantial push towards strengthening the local EV component ecosystem in India. The initial phase of the production line will have the capacity to produce 10,000 e-axles per month, with plans to expand this capacity in the coming years.

The inauguration of this new production line was celebrated with a line-off ceremony on June 5, showcasing Musashi’s commitment to the rapidly growing Indian EV market. Naoya Nishimura, CEO of Musashi for the India & Africa Region, highlighted the importance of developing a robust local manufacturing base for EV components to support the burgeoning demand for electric two-wheelers in the country.

Musashi has committed ₹160 crore in the first phase of its EV business expansion, which includes setting up new assembly lines and upgrading existing facilities. This venture began in September 2023 when Musashi announced a joint venture with Delta Electronics, Inc. and Toyota Tsusho Corporation, forming Musashi Delta e-Axle India Private Limited. Holding a majority stake of 51 percent, Musashi aims to not only serve the Indian market but also extend its reach to African and ASEAN regions.

The Bengaluru facility is expected to achieve two-thirds localisation of its total production cost by the end of this fiscal year, encompassing both motor assembly and drive unit assembly lines. This localisation strategy is poised to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of Musashi’s operations in the evolving EV market.

Furthermore, Musashi is collaborating with BNC Motors to develop and integrate these advanced EV drive units into BNC’s upcoming electric two-wheelers, which are anticipated to be comparable to 125 cc internal combustion engine scooters. This partnership is set to further augment Musashi’s footprint in the electric mobility sector, ensuring the provision of high-performance EV solutions across multiple markets.
