Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has expanded its maXTouch® M1 family of automotive touchscreen controllers, extending support across a wider range of display sizes—from free-form widescreen displays up to 42 inches to compact 2- to 5-inch screens. The latest additions, ATMXT3072M1-HC and ATMXT288M1, are designed to support multiple automotive display formats while enabling next-generation technologies including OLED and microLED.
The maXTouch M1 controllers incorporate Microchip’s Smart Mutual touch acquisition technology along with refined algorithms that increase touch Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) by up to 15 dB over earlier generations. The approach helps ensure stable touch performance even when integrated sensors operate under heavy capacitive loads and high levels of display noise coupling—conditions commonly seen in large-format, thin on-cell OLED displays. In such environments, embedded electrodes face elevated capacitive loading and interference, increasing the risk of inaccurate touch response in conventional capacitive solutions.
“As cockpit displays evolve rapidly with the shift toward software-defined vehicles, OEMs are adopting larger and more diverse screen designs to create immersive driver experiences,” said Giovanni Fontana, Director, Human Machine Interface Division, Microchip Technology. “This expansion strengthens our maXTouch M1 offering, helping customers integrate secure and dependable touch capability across a wide range of display types and sizes.”
The ATMXT3072M1-HC is aimed at large continuous touch sensor configurations that span both the instrument cluster and center information display (CID). Designed to support both left-hand and right-hand drive vehicle programs using a single hardware configuration, it reduces design complexity for global deployments. The continuous sensor design also helps maintain consistent optical performance under varying ambient light conditions. Its host-client configuration appears as a single maXTouch device to the host MCU, removing the need for an external MCU to combine touch coordinates. The host manages the client device communication, simplifying overall system architecture.
For smaller displays, the ATMXT288M1 targets compact cockpit applications such as analog-style digital clocks and AI driver assistant displays where PCB space is limited. Housed in a Thin Profile Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (TFBGA60) package, it reduces PCB area requirements by 20% compared with Microchip’s previous smallest automotive-qualified maXTouch controller. It is also the first M1 family product offered in a TFBGA package, making it suitable for space-constrained OLED and microLED implementations.
Both products are supported by Microchip’s maXTouch development ecosystem, including maXTouch Studio IDE for development and maXTouch Analyzer for production testing. Driver support is available across multiple RTOS environments such as Linux, Android, Windows, AliOS, QNX and Zephyr.
