Spanish steel group Megasa Siderúrgica has signed a contract with Danieli to modernise the 1-million-tonne-per-year bar, spooler and wire rod rolling mill at Siderúrgica Nacional (SN) Seixal in Portugal. The project will upgrade reheating, rolling and process-control operations, with start-up of the modernised facilities scheduled for the third quarter of 2027.
The first stage will involve installing Danieli’s Q-HEAT® system, which will comprise three induction coils with a total installed power of 6 MW. The system is designed to compensate for temperature losses as billets move from the reheating furnace to the first rolling stand.
Temperature drops can occur during billet transfer, particularly during welding operations. The induction system will also help equalise temperature along the length of each billet, supporting more consistent product quality and mechanical properties during rolling.
The project will also include changes to the intermediate mill area. The layout will be rearranged to simplify the roll pass design, streamline production and improve operational safety. Danieli will supply four new cantilever ESS rolling stands for this section of the mill. Automation will form another part of the upgrade. Danieli Automation will replace the existing Level 2 process-control platform with a new system intended to improve material tracking and production management.
The upgraded system will track material throughout the production route, from billet loading to the evacuation of finished products across the mill’s different finishing lines. This is expected to give operators better visibility of material movement and support process control across production stages.
The modernisation is intended to improve the coordination of rolling operations while addressing temperature consistency, mill layout and production tracking. The contract covers the equipment and automation changes outlined in the project, with the upgraded facilities expected to begin operating in Q3 2027.
The agreement continues a long-standing relationship between Megasa Siderúrgica and Danieli that has lasted more than 50 years. The SN Seixal plant has played a central role in the partnership, which has supported the development of the Portuguese facility over several decades.
The latest project brings together Danieli’s induction heating, rolling equipment and automation systems in a coordinated upgrade of the existing mill. Its focus is on improving billet temperature management before rolling, simplifying the intermediate mill arrangement and strengthening control of material through the production process. The work will be carried out at SN Seixal, which produces bars, spooled products and wire rod. The modernisation schedule sets the third quarter of 2027 as the target for start-up of the upgraded facilities.
