Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has inaugurated its new vehicle manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda, Haryana, marking a major expansion of its production footprint in India. The facility was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi through video conferencing during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum in New Delhi.

Spread across 800 acres, the integrated manufacturing complex includes a dedicated supplier park and has an initial production capacity of 500,000 vehicles annually, which will be doubled to one million units in the next phase. The project involves a planned investment of ₹35,000 crore and is expected to generate more than 21,000 employment opportunities.

Once fully operational, the Kharkhoda plant will rank among the world’s largest vehicle manufacturing facilities and contribute significantly to Maruti Suzuki’s target of achieving an annual production capacity of four million vehicles. The inauguration was attended by Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, and senior officials from the Government of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Toshihiro Suzuki said the new facility reflects the continued strength of the India-Japan partnership and the success of India’s manufacturing ecosystem. He noted that Suzuki plans to further expand investments, technology development, exports and employment in India while supporting the country’s long-term industrial growth.

He also highlighted India’s growing importance within Suzuki’s global operations, noting that the company’s first battery electric vehicle, the e VITARA, is being manufactured exclusively in India for export to international markets. He added that exports from India have enabled Suzuki to become the largest automobile importer into Japan, underlining global confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities.

The Kharkhoda facility has been developed on Suzuki’s Smart Factory platform, incorporating advanced digital manufacturing technologies for real-time production monitoring, improved safety, enhanced quality and higher productivity. The plant also integrates Industry 5.0 practices, including collaborative robots that work alongside employees to improve operational efficiency.

Sustainability is a central feature of the new facility. The plant will meet its entire electricity requirement through renewable energy, combining on-site solar generation with green power procurement. It currently operates with a 20 MW solar installation, which is planned to increase to 70 MW by 2030.

The facility will also include a biogas plant, battery energy storage system, zero liquid discharge water recycling system and extensive rainwater harvesting infrastructure. Maruti Suzuki is also supporting community development around the Kharkhoda facility through initiatives in education, healthcare, sanitation and village infrastructure, while expanding skill development programmes through its Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing to strengthen the future automotive workforce.
