Maruti Suzuki India Limited is expanding its Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) initiative in Gurugram under its corporate social responsibility programme, with plans to install 1,000 additional cameras integrated with radar systems at around 70 junctions. The expansion will cover nine road stretches spanning approximately 65 kilometres. Once completed, Maruti Suzuki’s deployment will total 1,400 cameras across 93 junctions and 13 key road stretches in the city.
The company is implementing the initiative in partnership with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Gurugram Police. The system is intended to improve traffic monitoring, strengthen enforcement of traffic rules and encourage safer driving practices.
Sibash Kabiraj, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, said the expansion would strengthen the authorities’ ability to identify traffic violations, support timely enforcement and improve compliance with traffic regulations. PC Meena, IAS, Chief Executive Officer of GMDA, said the expanded CCTV network would improve traffic surveillance and coordination among enforcement agencies. Connecting the cameras to GMDA’s Integrated Command and Control Centre is expected to support real-time monitoring and quicker action against violations.
Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the company was working with GMDA and Gurugram Police to strengthen road safety through technology-based measures. He identified riding without helmets, triple riding, red-light jumping, over-speeding and wrong-side driving among the violations the system is designed to address. Mr Bharti added that improving road safety requires responsible driving, effective traffic enforcement and robust driving licence testing. He said Maruti Suzuki would continue to work with authorities to support these efforts.
The ITMS uses cameras to detect traffic offences, including red-light violations and speeding. The system also supports automatic number plate recognition. When a violation is detected, the cameras capture the vehicle registration number and transmit the information to a data server at the Integrated Command and Control Centre, where the relevant authorities can initiate further action.
The Gurugram initiative builds on Maruti Suzuki’s earlier deployment of a Traffic Safety Management System in Delhi. The company is also working on plans to extend technology-enabled traffic management and road safety initiatives to other states. Through the expansion, Maruti Suzuki aims to support local authorities in improving traffic discipline and monitoring road use across key routes in Gurugram.
