Mahindra will stop production of the Marazzo MPV after six years due to disappointing sales. Launched in September 2018, the Marazzo aimed to compete with the Maruti Ertiga, XL6, and Kia Carens. It was priced between Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 13.90 lakh and offered in four trims with 7- and 8-seater options.
Sources indicate production will end in the next two months, though Mahindra has not yet confirmed. The discontinuation of the Marazzo will make Mahindra an SUV-only manufacturer, following the end of its Verito sedan production.
The MPV market, dominated by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, makes up about 16% of the total passenger vehicle market. In contrast, the Marazzo’s sales have plummeted to just two digits monthly. Mahindra sold 44,793 Marazzo units until June 2024, averaging 640 units per month. However, recent figures show an average of only 34 units sold per month in the last five months, compared to Maruti’s 14,495 Ertigas and Kia’s 4,412 Carens.
The Marazzo’s price now ranges from Rs 14.59 lakh to Rs 17 lakh, and discounts of up to Rs 93,000 were available until June. Developed by the Mahindra North American Technical Centre in Michigan, USA, the Marazzo received no major updates during its time on the market. Plans for an AMT-equipped version and a petrol model never materialized.
The Marazzo featured a 123hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and a fuel efficiency rating of 17.3kpl by ARAI. Its ladder-frame platform and front-wheel-drive setup were less desirable in hilly areas compared to rear-wheel-drive models like the Toyota Innova Crysta. Buyers also reported that the engine felt underpowered when fully loaded.
Looking ahead, Mahindra is set to launch the Thar 5-door in the coming weeks and is working on an XUV700-based EV expected by the end of the year.
