Lockheed Martin has completed a live-fire demonstration of its Spike Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) missile system from an Infantry Squad Vehicle–Utility (ISV-U), validating the system’s performance in a ground-based mobile environment and supporting the US Army’s Mobile Long-Range Precision-Strike Missile (M-LRPSM) requirement.

The three-day demonstration at Dugway Proving Grounds involved 17 precision engagements against simulated operational targets at different combat ranges. Most of the shots were conducted by US Army infantry soldiers. The exercise marked the first time the Spike NLOS missile was fired from the ISV-U platform.

The demonstration assessed the ability of soldiers to employ the missile from a mobile ground vehicle to engage targets beyond direct line of sight. The capability is intended to extend the reach of infantry units while providing precision strike options against high-value targets. Soldiers from Transformation in Contact (TIC) units took part in the demonstration and provided feedback on the system. Their observations will be used during continued validation testing and to help shape the Army’s final M-LRPSM requirements.

Casey Walsh, programme director for Lockheed Martin Multi-Domain Missile Systems, said the demonstration was an important step in showing that infantry personnel could operate a long-range precision missile system from a mobile platform. He said live-fire data and soldier feedback would contribute to the development of the final requirements and support the Army’s plans for fielding the capability.

The demonstration also highlighted the system’s training requirements. According to Lockheed Martin, participating soldiers completed training and conducted live-fire missions within the same week. The company said the results demonstrated that troops could learn to operate the system and carry out engagements within a short period.

The Spike NLOS system is being evaluated for use with the US Army’s Mobile Brigade Combat Team. Its integration with the ISV-U is intended to give mobile infantry units an additional long-range engagement option, improving their ability to respond to targets outside the line of sight and reducing the time between target identification and engagement. Further validation testing is planned over the next year before the programme moves towards Phase 3. That phase is expected to include initial operational production and delivery of final system prototypes to the Army.

TIC units will continue to participate in testing through direct user assessments and soldier feedback sessions. Information gathered during these activities will help determine how the system meets operational requirements and the needs of personnel in the field.

Lockheed Martin said the latest demonstration builds on earlier Phase 1 and Phase 2 milestones in the Spike NLOS programme. The company is continuing work with the US Army to assess the missile’s performance, integration with mobile platforms and suitability for future operational use.
