Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited, represented by its Managing Director B Prabhakaran, has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with Tata Steel Limited, represented by its CEO and Managing Director TV Narendran, to assess potential avenues of cooperation across various stages of mining, logistics, pellet production and steel manufacturing. The agreement outlines a broad framework for both organisations to jointly examine opportunities where their respective strengths and resources naturally complement each other.

Areas under consideration include greenfield steelmaking ventures, development of iron ore mines, establishment of slurry pipeline systems, pellet manufacturing capacities in resource-rich regions of India, production of direct reduced iron, and the export of low-carbon, value-enhanced iron and steel products. The collaboration aims to promote sustainable growth and efficiency within the Indian steel landscape by leveraging the combined expertise of both companies.

As part of the assessment under the MoU, the two companies intend to explore specific opportunities in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. These include potential collaboration in developing and operating mining leases and related infrastructure to significantly scale up iron ore output, positioning the region as an emerging steel production corridor.

The parties will also review Tata Steel’s potential participation in Lloyds Metals’ ongoing integrated steel initiatives currently underway in the district. All possible projects and initiatives contemplated within the MoU will undergo detailed analysis, due diligence and review, and will require necessary internal and regulatory clearances before any final decision is made.

Separately, Tata Steel has acquired a 50.01 percent share in Brahmani River Pellets Limited (BRPL), making it a co-owner of the company. BRPL operates a four-million-tonne-per-annum pellet facility in Jajpur, Odisha, supported by a 212-kilometre slurry pipeline connecting the plant to a beneficiation facility at Barbil.

Tata Steel, among the oldest steel producers globally, has a crude steel capacity of 35 million tonnes per annum, ranking it as the eighth-largest steelmaker worldwide. The company operates integrated steel facilities and offers a wide range of branded and value-added steel products.

Lloyds Metals is a leading mining and metals player in Maharashtra and currently runs the country’s largest iron ore mine in Gadchiroli. In addition to its established capabilities in producing iron ore, pellets and direct reduced iron, the company is expanding into fully integrated steel production, reinforcing Gadchiroli’s emergence as a major steel-producing region in India.
