Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Poland-based Pojazdy Szynowe PESA Bydgoszcz SA. to explore opportunities in passenger rolling stock for India’s metro, semi-high-speed and high-speed rail segments. The agreement was signed during the Polish-Indian Economic Forum in New Delhi. It establishes a framework for the two companies to explore cooperation in the development, manufacturing and deployment of passenger rail vehicles for regional, intercity and urban transport in India and other markets.

The proposed partnership comes as India expands its metro networks and develops faster intercity and high-speed rail services. These projects are expected to create demand for modern passenger trains and related components. JWL plans to extend its capabilities beyond freight wagons and components to build a broader mobility business covering both freight and passenger rolling stock.

PESA designs, manufactures and maintains passenger trains, metros and trams for markets across Europe. Its roots in Bydgoszcz, Poland, date back to 1851. Jupiter Wagons brings manufacturing capacity and experience supplying Indian Railways and private-sector customers, along with capabilities in components, castings and wheelsets.

Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Limited, said the company was working to bring more parts of the mobility value chain under one business. He said passenger rolling stock was a natural extension of its existing operations and that the proposed collaboration would allow both companies to explore the development of passenger trains manufactured in India. Mr Lohia added that the initiative was aligned with the Government of India’s Make in India vision and could create opportunities to serve domestic and international markets.

Krzysztof Zdziarski, CEO of PESA Bydgoszcz, said India was an important potential market for the Polish train manufacturer. He said the agreement would provide an opportunity to work with JWL on projects and supply vehicles to Indian rail operators, while supporting PESA’s international expansion beyond Europe.

Jupiter Wagons has manufacturing facilities in Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Indore, Jabalpur, Bengaluru and Aurangabad, with backward integration through its foundry operations. Its product portfolio includes freight wagons, locomotives, commercial vehicles, ISO marine containers, couplers, draft gears, bogies, brake systems, wheels, axles and wheelsets. The company also has partnerships with international manufacturers and technology providers, including Tatravagonka of Slovakia, DAKO CZ of the Czech Republic, Kovis of Slovenia and Talleres Alegria of Spain.
