JSW Steel has commenced development activities for its integrated steel project in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion plans and reinforcing its commitment to India’s manufacturing sector. The project is expected to strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem while supporting the country’s growing demand for low-carbon steel. The project commencement ceremony was attended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, senior officials of the state government, public representatives, local stakeholders and JSW Group Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal.

The integrated steel plant will be developed by JSW Rayalaseema Steel Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Ltd., in two phases. The first phase will involve an investment of ₹4,500 crore to establish a one-million-tonne-per-annum (1 MTPA) integrated steel plant focused on manufacturing low-carbon steel products.

In the second phase, the company plans to invest up to ₹11,850 crore to double the plant’s capacity to 2 MTPA, taking the overall project investment to approximately ₹16,350 crore. The facility will be strategically located in the Rayalaseema region and supported by planned road, rail, power and water infrastructure to ensure efficient logistics and long-term operational sustainability.

Speaking on the occasion, Sajjan Jindal said Andhra Pradesh continues to emerge as an attractive destination for industrial investments due to its focus on infrastructure development and manufacturing-led growth. He noted that the Rayalaseema project reflects JSW Steel’s long-term confidence in the state’s economic potential and the company’s commitment to building globally competitive manufacturing capabilities.

Jayant Acharya, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Steel, said the project aligns with the company’s strategy of creating future-ready steelmaking assets while contributing to regional industrial development. He added that the investment would enhance India’s domestic steel production capacity and support the country’s infrastructure expansion.

The Rayalaseema plant will be built around Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, using recycled steel scrap and high-grade Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) as key raw materials to manufacture advanced structural steel. The facility has been designed with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency, resource optimisation and lower carbon emissions. Greater integration of renewable energy is also planned as part of the company’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Once operational, the project is expected to stimulate the growth of ancillary industries, improve logistics infrastructure and generate significant economic activity across the Rayalaseema region. It will also strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position as a preferred destination for large-scale manufacturing investments while supporting India’s transition towards sustainable steel production.
