John Deere has expanded its production-class equipment portfolio with the launch of the new 844 X-Tier and 904 X-Tier wheel loaders, designed to help customers achieve higher productivity, improved fuel efficiency and lower operating costs in demanding material-handling environments. Developed for industries such as aggregates, mining, quarrying and large-scale earthmoving, the new X-Tier models integrate advanced electrified drivetrain technology, intelligent machine controls and enhanced operator-assistance features. The machines are engineered to maximize material movement while improving operational efficiency across high-production applications.
At the heart of the new loaders is the John Deere Electric Variable Transmission (EVT), an advanced drivetrain system that replaces traditional mechanical constraints with electronically managed power delivery. This technology provides smoother machine operation, faster response times and improved efficiency under varying load conditions.
The EVT system enables single-pedal machine control and separates hydraulic performance from engine speed, allowing operators to maintain consistent hydraulic power while reducing the need for constant input adjustments. The result is enhanced machine responsiveness and improved productivity throughout the work cycle.
The 844 and 904 X-Tier loaders also feature John Deere’s new Pile Slip Assist technology, which is designed to improve traction and increase bucket fill efficiency when working in dense material piles. By optimizing wheel grip and reducing tire slippage, the system helps operators load more material with each pass while minimizing tire wear, one of the largest operating expenses in this equipment category.
To further increase productivity, the machines are equipped with larger, high-strength steel buckets that enable operators to move greater volumes of material during each loading cycle. This enhancement contributes to faster truck loading times and improved overall jobsite performance.
The loaders offer two selectable operating modes tailored to different jobsite requirements. Standard Mode prioritizes fuel efficiency and can deliver fuel savings of up to 15 percent compared with previous-generation models. Performance Mode is optimized for maximum output and can increase productivity by up to five percent in demanding applications. Together, these improvements can help reduce total cost of ownership by as much as four percent over earlier models.
Operator visibility and jobsite awareness have also been significantly enhanced through available Advanced Vision System (AVS) and Advanced Object Detection technologies. The AVS incorporates digital cameras mounted on the side mirrors to provide expanded side and rear visibility beyond what conventional mirrors can offer.
Dynamic projected path lines displayed during reverse operation help operators visualize the machine’s intended movement based on articulation angle, improving awareness in busy work environments. Camera feeds are integrated into a dedicated in-cab display, providing a centralized view of critical surroundings and helping improve operational confidence.
Like other machines in the X-Tier lineup, the new wheel loaders are fully supported by John Deere’s connected technologies, including remote diagnostics, equipment monitoring and maintenance management tools. These capabilities help customers maximize uptime, improve fleet performance and streamline service planning. With the introduction of the 844 and 904 X-Tier models, John Deere continues to expand its portfolio of advanced construction and material-handling equipment, delivering solutions that address the growing demands for productivity, efficiency and sustainability in modern heavy-duty operations.
