JA SOLAR, a leading manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) modules, and Borussia Dortmund, one of Europe’s top football clubs, have announced a groundbreaking partnership to install a cutting-edge solar energy system atop SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. This collaboration will create the world’s largest photovoltaic system on a stadium roof, further cementing the venue’s status as a symbol of sustainability and innovation. Known for hosting the highest average attendance per match in European football, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is now set to lead by example in the global energy transition.

JA SOLAR places a high value on integrity, respect, and the pursuit of sustainable solutions when selecting partners, and these principles align perfectly with Borussia Dortmund’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The new solar installation is a key part of both organizations’ long-term sustainability goals, generating reliable, green electricity for the next 30 years. This initiative also signals JA SOLAR’s continued investment in the European PV market.

The project will feature JA SOLAR’s Full-Black modules, which are renowned for their efficiency and sleek aesthetic. These black-and-yellow modules not only complement Borussia Dortmund’s iconic team colors but are also designed for both residential and commercial applications. More than 11,000 of these high-efficiency modules will be installed, generating over 4 GWh of electricity annually for the stadium’s use. This initiative will reduce the club’s carbon footprint by an estimated 1,800 tons of CO₂ per year and bolster the stadium’s energy security and resilience. For context, the system will produce enough energy to power the floodlights for 1,000 football matches annually. Installation work is slated to begin in the summer of 2025, with the goal of completing the system by the end of the same year.

Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We are thrilled to collaborate with JA SOLAR, a key partner in the renovation of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK’s photovoltaic system. This project underscores our ongoing commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge technology. With JA SOLAR’s modules, we’re not only powering the largest solar installation on any stadium roof but also paving the way for a greener future.”

Henning Schulze, Vice President of JA SOLAR, added, “This partnership represents more than just a technological achievement—it’s a statement about our shared values with Borussia Dortmund. Our participation in this high-profile project is a clear affirmation that JA SOLAR is committed to long-term growth and to driving meaningful change in both the solar and football industries.”

JA SOLAR will showcase its innovative solar solutions at Intersolar Europe in Munich from May 7–9, 2025, at booth A2.280, where visitors can learn more about the collaboration and the future of sustainable energy.
