Indkal Technologies announced on Thursday that it has signed a deal with Acer to design, manufacture, and sell smartphones under the Acer brand in India. This will be the first time Acer-branded smartphones are available in the Indian market.
This news comes after Indkal raised $36 million (about Rs 300 crore) last month, which will be used to develop products like air conditioners, TVs, washing machines, and refrigerators at a new research and development facility.
Indkal plans to launch a variety of smartphone models priced between Rs 15,000 and Rs 50,000 in mid-2024. The company aims to produce one million devices each year and is applying for the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
Anand Dubey, CEO of Indkal Technologies, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting that all Acer smartphones will be designed and made in India. He promised well-designed phones with high-end processors and great camera features.
Since 2021, Indkal has held the rights to manufacture and sell Acer-branded televisions and home appliances in India, starting with premium air conditioners and washing machines in 2023. Jade Zhou, vice president at Acer, stated that Indkal’s efforts will provide more smartphone choices for customers in India.
As of early 2024, Acer is the third-largest personal computer maker in India, holding a market share of 15.4%. According to Indkal’s financial reports, the company saw its revenue increase more than four times, reaching Rs 260 crore in FY23, compared to Rs 61 crore in FY22, and turned a profit of Rs 10.89 crore after a loss the previous year.
