Indian Railways has introduced RailParcel, a pilot programme aimed at improving parcel logistics through rail transport across seven major cities—Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru, and Chennai. The initiative is being led by the South Central Railway (SCR) zone and supported by ROQIT, a digital platform developed by AION-Tech Solutions Limited to manage parcel operations and coordination during the pilot phase.
RailParcel is designed to make rail-based parcel movement faster and more transparent by introducing structured workflow digitisation, real-time tracking, and improved coordination among railway teams and logistics partners. The system integrates with existing railway infrastructure to ensure smooth operations while testing new digital processes.
Bhanutej Mallangi, Chief Product Officer at ROQIT, said the programme marks an important step toward modernising parcel logistics within the rail network. He noted that the platform provides a technology foundation that improves operational visibility and standardises processes across different points in the logistics chain. Insights from the pilot, he added, can help build scalable and data-driven logistics solutions across Indian Railways.
During the proof-of-concept phase, ROQIT will enable key functions such as real-time parcel tracking, digitised booking and workflow management, readiness for integration with third-party logistics providers, and compatibility with existing railway systems including CRIS. The pilot focuses on creating a reliable digital framework that works alongside current infrastructure while preparing for wider adoption.
Indian Railways is pursuing greater use of technology to strengthen logistics efficiency, improve multimodal connectivity, and support sustainable freight movement through its largely electrified network. RailParcel is expected to help better utilise rail capacity for parcel services, offering a cost-effective and environmentally responsible alternative for goods transport.
Depending on the results of the pilot, future phases may explore broader network optimisation, advanced data analytics, and deeper integration with other transport systems. The programme reflects ongoing efforts by Indian Railways to modernise operations and position rail as a dependable, scalable option for parcel logistics.
