A major step forward in strengthening India’s indigenous naval maintenance capabilities has been achieved with the commissioning of a specialised pneumatic RAM test facility at Karwar in Karnataka. The facility, inaugurated by Vice Admiral B Sivakumar, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy, has been established at the Naval Group India workshop and is designed to support the maintenance and servicing of critical systems onboard Kalvari-class submarines.
This newly operational facility enables in-country testing, repair, and overhaul of pneumatic RAM systems, which are vital components used in submarine operations. Until now, these systems had to be shipped to France for servicing, resulting in extended turnaround times and increased logistical costs. The commissioning of this facility is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency while reducing dependence on overseas infrastructure.
The test facility represents a key milestone in India’s efforts to build self-reliance in defence maintenance and sustainment. With this capability now available domestically, the Indian Navy will be able to ensure faster turnaround for maintenance cycles, thereby improving fleet readiness and availability.
Globally, such specialised maintenance capabilities are limited, with similar facilities previously available only in France and Brazil. The addition of India to this list underscores the growing maturity of the country’s defence ecosystem and its ability to support complex naval platforms.
Naval Group, which has played a central role in supporting India’s Scorpene-class submarine programme, operates in the country through its wholly owned subsidiary, Naval Group India. Since its establishment in 2008, the company has been focused on supporting indigenisation efforts, developing local engineering capabilities, and strengthening the domestic defence supply chain.
The Karwar facility is aligned with the broader objective of enhancing self-reliance under India’s defence manufacturing initiatives. By building advanced maintenance capabilities within the country, the initiative contributes to reducing lifecycle costs and improving the sustainability of naval assets.
Naval Group India continues to work closely with Indian partners to develop a robust ecosystem for submarine support and maintenance. The company’s efforts are aimed at creating a centre of excellence in India that can cater to a wide range of defence requirements while promoting collaboration with domestic industries. The commissioning of the pneumatic test facility marks an important advancement in India’s naval infrastructure, reinforcing the country’s commitment to strengthening its maritime capabilities and achieving greater technological independence.
