Huawei and Thailand’s Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) have jointly launched a next-generation intelligent substation solution during an event in Bangkok focused on the role of artificial intelligence in modern power systems. The new solution marks a step forward in Thailand’s grid modernization efforts, addressing the growing demands of renewable energy integration, interactive power consumption, and system reliability. William Zhang, President of Enterprise Business at Huawei Thailand, said substations play a critical role in ensuring grid stability as power systems evolve.
The jointly developed solution combines optical sensing, visual monitoring, and AI-driven predictive maintenance to support intelligent inspections and more efficient operations and maintenance, helping substations operate more safely and reliably. Pantong Thinsatit, Assistant Governor for Grid Network Operations at PEA, said digital transformation is central to the utility’s development strategy. PEA has already deployed intelligent unattended systems across 467 substations and plans to move toward full automation by eliminating data silos and integrating advanced capabilities such as smart poles, license plate recognition, battery monitoring, and emergency response systems.
Traditional substations often face limitations including inadequate security monitoring, reliance on manual inspections, and legacy cabling that leads to high latency and reduced stability. Huawei’s solution addresses these issues through three core functions:
Fiber optic sensing combined with AI detects intrusions automatically and links alerts with video systems, enabling proactive, continuous monitoring. AI-powered inspection models support functions such as remote meter reading and transformer oil leakage detection, enabling rapid fault identification and response.
Passive optical network (PON) technology within substations reduces deployment time and cost while providing stable, high-capacity connectivity for intelligent operations. The collaboration reflects ongoing cooperation between Huawei and PEA in advancing digital infrastructure. Huawei said it will continue working with Thai utilities and partners to support the transition toward smarter, more resilient power systems.
