Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Danfoss announced they are working together to offer a new heat recovery module called HPE IT Sustainability Services – Data Center Heat Recovery. This will help businesses use excess heat from data centers as a source of renewable energy, making IT operations more eco-friendly.

AI technology is growing fast, which means data centers need more power. By 2026, the AI industry could use ten times more electricity than it did in 2023, according to the International Energy Agency. To deal with this, data centers need to be more energy-efficient. In Europe alone, data centers produce enough excess heat to meet the heating and hot water needs of many buildings.

Solutions offered by HPE and Danfoss to address these issues

HPE’s Modular Data Center (MDC) consists of compact, high-density containers that can be set up in various locations and use direct liquid cooling to reduce energy consumption by 20%. Danfoss’ Heat Reuse Modules collect excess heat from data centers to provide heating for nearby buildings and industries, with their Turbocor® compressors boosting cooling efficiency by up to 30%.Jürgen Fischer, President of Danfoss Climate Solutions, said this partnership with HPE is a step towards greener data centers.

HPE’s Sue Preston added that their collaboration with Danfoss turns waste heat into a valuable resource, making energy use smarter and more efficient.

HPE’s modular data centers also have a high power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.1, which is better than most traditional data centers. They are ideal for high-demand tasks like supercomputing and AI, helping users get faster results.

Danfoss already uses heat recovery technology at its headquarters in Denmark, providing a model for these new data centers. The partnership with HPE aims to drive innovation and decarbonize data centers. HPE IT Sustainability Services – Data Center Heat Recovery is available now for businesses to order.
