In a major step toward modernizing urban traffic systems, Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), in partnership with the Gurugram Traffic Police, the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), and other civic bodies, has initiated a comprehensive traffic management upgrade across 24 major intersections in Gurugram. Work has already begun at two of the city’s busiest junctions.
The collaboration has also led to the establishment of two specialized facilities—the Traffic Engineering Centre (TEC) and the Organisation Development Centre (ODC)—located within Gurugram’s traffic towers. These centers are designed to advance road safety and streamline traffic operations through technology-driven engineering solutions and skill-building programs for enforcement and transport professionals.
Both TEC and ODC have completed a scientific audit of the 24 targeted intersections under Hyundai’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The improvement works are underway at Rajiv Chowk and Shankar Chowk, marking the first phase of Gurugram’s data-led traffic transformation plan.
Speaking on the development, Puneet Anand, Vice President, Hyundai Motor India Limited, said “At Hyundai Motor India Foundation, we are committed to creating safer and more efficient mobility systems through our ‘Easy Roads’ initiative. The Traffic Engineering Centre in Haryana, built in partnership with IRTE, exemplifies scientific traffic management, road safety audits, and capacity building for enforcement teams. By leveraging advanced technology, we aim to reduce road accidents, encourage responsible driving behavior, and ensure smoother mobility for all citizens.”
Mr Anand further added “The recognition received from the United Nations Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety (WP.1) underscores the global relevance of this initiative. Following the success in Haryana, we are expanding similar centers to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, reinforcing Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’ and promoting safer road practices nationwide.”
Dr Rohit Baluja, President of IRTE, highlighted the scientific approach behind the project “The Traffic Engineering Centre has been developed to create a data-backed and sustainable traffic management system for Gurugram under the leadership of the city’s Traffic Police. Our engineers monitor traffic flow, study violations, analyze congestion factors, and assess the behavior of vulnerable road users. Using real-time data from 218 junction cameras, supported by the ICCC Gurugram, we are implementing solutions grounded in research and evidence.”
Saurabh S Sharma of HMIL added “This initiative signifies a major move toward data-driven and evidence-based traffic management. By combining enforcement expertise with forensic road safety methods, we aim to deliver sustainable improvements and safer roads for everyone.”
Established in 2006, HMIF drives Hyundai’s social responsibility programs across India. The foundation focuses on sustainable community development through initiatives in healthcare, education, environmental conservation, road safety, skill-building, and disaster response.
In education, HMIF has supported school infrastructure upgrades, provided scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and promoted digital learning tools. The foundation also backs skill development and vocational training programs to improve employment opportunities for youth from low-income families.
Within the healthcare domain, HMIF runs several initiatives to enhance medical access in remote areas. This includes mobile health units, medical equipment donations, awareness drives, and its SparshSanjeevani program, which has played a significant role in deploying ambulances and emergency care services in rural India. Environmental initiatives by HMIF have included afforestation efforts, water management projects, and promotion of renewable energy sources—all designed to foster ecological balance and involve communities in sustainability practices.
Road safety awareness is another focus area, where HMIF partners with local authorities to conduct educational campaigns and training programs aimed at reducing road accidents. In times of crises, such as natural disasters, HMIF has actively participated in relief operations—distributing essential supplies, medical aid, and helping with community rebuilding efforts.
