In a major push toward sustainable transportation, Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, has signed two strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with M/s Adani Cement, one of India’s leading cement producers. The agreements focus on rail-based movement of bulk cement using specialized tank containers, representing a significant large-scale initiative in the country.

Under these MoUs, CONCOR will operate dedicated container rakes to ensure smooth and efficient transport of bulk cement across key rail corridors. By combining Indian Railways’ extensive network with CONCOR’s multimodal logistics expertise, the partnership aims to shift a significant portion of cement transport from road to rail, improving operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

The initiative is set to deliver multiple benefits: a reduction in carbon emissions by minimizing road transport, helping India meet its net-zero targets and supporting the National Logistics Policy’s green freight objectives; enhanced supply chain efficiency and lower transport costs for Adani Cement; and a scalable model that could inspire similar eco-friendly bulk logistics solutions across other industries.

The MoUs were formally signed on October 24, 2025, in New Delhi, with Sanjay Swarup, Chairman & Managing Director of CONCOR, and Vinod Bahety, CEO of Adani Cement, along with senior officials from both organizations. Shri Swarup highlighted that the partnership reinforces CONCOR’s commitment to innovative, eco-conscious logistics solutions, leveraging rail for bulk cement transport to boost efficiency and sustainability.

Shri Bahety emphasized that this collaboration supports Adani Cement’s goal of becoming the lowest-cost producer and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the government’s COP26 commitments and broader sustainability objectives. This partnership underscores CONCOR’s leading role in transforming India’s logistics landscape and promoting green, cost-efficient, and scalable transport solutions.

The Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) is a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, established in 1988. It plays a vital role in the development of intermodal transport and logistics services across the country. CONCOR provides efficient and cost-effective containerized cargo handling, storage, and transportation through rail and road networks. It operates a vast network of Inland Container Depots (ICDs) and Container Freight Stations (CFSs), connecting ports to the hinterland and facilitating international trade. With a strong focus on digital innovation, green logistics, and customer service, CONCOR has become a key player in strengthening India’s supply chain infrastructure and promoting the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Ease of Doing Business’ initiatives.

Since entering the cement sector in September 2022 by acquiring controlling stakes in Ambuja Cement, the company has achieved a capacity of 89 MTPA, including a 22 MTPA increase in the past two years. The expansion and acquisitions have also contributed to a reduction in logistics and other costs, with an 18% decrease since September 2022. Adani Group’s strategic capex and opex initiatives are designed to enhance cost leadership in the market.
