Hitachi Energy India has secured an order from the Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) to supply 30 units of ultra-high-voltage 765-kilovolt (kV) transformers. These transformers will be produced at Hitachi Energy’s power transformer facility in Maneja, Vadodara, Gujarat, according to the company.

The 765 kV transformers will play a crucial role in enhancing the reliability, security, and efficiency of India’s power grid, supporting the growing demand for electricity across the country. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. Once deployed, the transformers will enable power transmission equivalent to the average consumption of 30 million Indian households. High-voltage transmission like this allows for more efficient long-distance power transfer by reducing energy losses and cutting operational costs, ultimately helping to keep electricity prices affordable for consumers.

With global demand for grid infrastructure rising, utilities are shifting focus from short-term projects to longer-term, program-based planning. This trend allows suppliers like Hitachi Energy to better allocate resources and ensure on-time delivery.

N Venu, Managing Director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India, stated, “This shift in utility planning enables us to strategically invest in capacity, manage supply chains, and meet delivery timelines effectively. As a leading transformer manufacturer, we combine global technological expertise with local experience to support vital national projects and drive the transition to sustainable energy.”

Recently, Hitachi Energy also achieved a breakthrough by successfully testing a 765 kV/400 kV single-phase, 250 MVA natural ester-filled oil transformer. This marks the first time such a transformer at this voltage and capacity has been developed using biodegradable ester oil, Hitachi is committed to driving social innovation and building a sustainable society by leveraging the power of data and technology. Through its Lumada solutions, which combine Information Technology (IT), Operational Technology (OT), and products, Hitachi aims to solve the challenges faced by both customers and society at large.

Guided by the principles of Digital, Green, and Innovation, Hitachi is focused on growth through collaboration and co-creation with customers. For fiscal year 2023 (ended March 31, 2024), the company reported a total revenue of ¥8.5 trillion from these three business sectors.
