Rajasthan’s emergence as a national hub for the metals and mining sector continues to be driven by Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company whose partnership with the state spans several decades. As the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and one of the top five silver producers, the company’s five mines and three smelters anchor Rajasthan’s critical mineral economy. Supported by long-term investments and advanced technologies, Hindustan Zinc has delivered significant value to the state. Over the last ten years, the company has contributed ₹35,865 crore to the Rajasthan State Exchequer, including ₹5,145 crore in FY25 alone—an infusion that amounts to nearly ₹10 crore per day into the state’s development framework.
These contributions help strengthen Rajasthan’s fiscal capacity, supporting infrastructure expansion, rural development, social programmes and improved public services across mineral-producing regions. At the national level as well, Hindustan Zinc remains an essential contributor. Its FY25 contribution to the state reflects an 18% increase over the previous year and forms part of its total national contribution of ₹1,52,992 crore over the past decade, as presented in the company’s independently assured 8th Tax Transparency Report (FY25).
Under its transformation blueprint—Hindustan Zinc 2.0—the company is now broadening its portfolio to evolve into a diversified, future-oriented multi-metal enterprise aligned with India’s growing demand for critical minerals. Earlier, Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, noted, “Hindustan Zinc is evolving beyond its zinc and silver foundation to build a multi-metal business ready for the future. As the need for critical minerals rises across clean energy, digital infrastructure and national security, we are investing in the capabilities and partnerships required to responsibly power India’s growth.”
Since 2002, Hindustan Zinc has expanded its operations from producing 2 lakh tonnes of metal annually to over 1 million tonnes. Silver, an essential component in solar and clean energy technologies, has seen a twentyfold production increase since 2003, positioning Rajasthan as a major participant in global clean energy value chains. This growth has been underpinned by modern technology systems and a strong sustainability focus. In 2025, the company was recognized for the third consecutive year as the most sustainable metals and mining company worldwide by S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment and became the first Indian member of the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM).
Commenting recently on the company’s commitment to global standards, Ms Hebbar added, “Our membership in ICMM is not symbolic. It reflects our determination to continually raise the bar. Every tonne of metal we produce must contribute to a greener, stronger and more self-reliant India.”
Parallel to its economic influence, Hindustan Zinc has made a substantial social impact. Since FY16, the company has invested more than ₹1,750 crore in community development across 2,300 villages, benefitting 2.3 million people through education, healthcare, skills development, women’s empowerment, rural infrastructure and sports initiatives. As one of Rajasthan’s largest employment generators, the company’s Zinclusion programme continues to champion diversity and inclusion. In a landmark move, Hindustan Zinc recently inducted 23 transgender professionals across its operations and plans to welcome seven more in the coming year.
Looking ahead, major upcoming investments—including a proposed 250 KTPA metals complex and India’s first 10 MTPA tailings reprocessing facility at Rampura Agucha, home to the world’s largest underground zinc mining operations—are set to further strengthen the company’s role in Rajasthan’s development. As demand increases for zinc, silver and new-age critical minerals, the company’s HZL 2.0 transformation is laying the foundation for a multi-metal enterprise that supports industrial expansion, clean energy ambitions and the state’s long-term growth trajectory.
