Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), India’s sole integrated zinc producer and the world’s largest in the sector, has reinforced its focus on climate responsibility by announcing energy savings exceeding 1 lakh gigajoules and a reduction of over 20,000 tCO₂e in greenhouse gas emissions for FY25. The announcement coincides with National Energy Conservation Day, highlighting the company’s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and decarbonise operations across its Rajasthan sites.
To illustrate the impact, the energy conserved by the company this year—more than 1 lakh GJ—matches the approximate annual electricity use of nearly 19,000 households in India, based on Ministry of Power estimates of average domestic consumption. This comparison highlights how industrial energy efficiency contributes directly to the nation’s energy resilience and daily living standards.
Over the years, Hindustan Zinc has deployed a wide array of initiatives to raise energy performance and shrink its carbon footprint. These include upgrading to high-efficiency equipment, introducing variable-frequency drives, refining smelting and thermal processes, and integrating digital, AI-driven systems for continuous energy monitoring and optimisation.
At the same time, the company has accelerated its shift toward renewable energy. In March 2025, it signed a round-the-clock Power Delivery Agreement with Serentica Renewables, expanding its green-power portfolio to 530 MW. This step moves the company closer to its target of sourcing 70% of its total electricity needs from renewables by FY28, supporting its SBTi-aligned pathway to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier and contributing to global sustainability goals.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, commented “Our vision is rooted in a simple idea: the mines of tomorrow will not be defined merely by production volumes, but by responsible, intelligent operations. Advancements in energy efficiency, clean mobility, and renewable power are enabling us to redefine mining in a low-carbon era. On Energy Conservation Day, we reaffirm our commitment to shaping a sustainable mining future that delivers long-term value to India and the world.”
These achievements add to a strong year for sustainability. Earlier in FY25, the company reported avoiding 6.7 lakh tonnes of GHG emissions, raising renewable energy to nearly one-fifth of its power requirement. It was also named the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Additionally, Hindustan Zinc became India’s first member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), reinforcing its leadership in responsible mining practices.
As part of its broader sustainability outreach, the company has launched “The Power of Less,” a behavioural-change campaign promoting mindful energy usage. Activities include a No-Vehicle Day in its business units, competitions such as quizzes and poster/video creation, and community-focused initiatives encouraging low-carbon lifestyles among employees and families.
Together with its decarbonisation strategy, these programmes reflect the company’s broader ambition to evolve into a future-ready, multi-metal powerhouse that supports India’s clean-energy ambitions and contributes to Rajasthan’s long-term economic progress.
Hindustan Zinc Limited (BSE: 500188; NSE: HINDZINC), part of the Vedanta Group, is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and ranks among the top five global silver producers. With a dominant 77% share of India’s primary zinc market, the company exports to more than 40 countries. For the third year in a row, it has been recognised as the global leader in sustainability in the metals and mining category by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025.
Hindustan Zinc also became the first Indian member of the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) in 2025 and introduced EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc brand produced using renewable power, with a footprint under 1 tonne CO₂e per tonne of zinc—around 75% lower than the global average. The company is certified as 3.32 times water-positive and remains committed to reaching Net Zero emissions by or before 2050. Through its focused social programmes, it has positively impacted the lives of 2.3 million people and is ranked among India’s top ten CSR contributors. As a key supplier of metals essential for the energy transition, Hindustan Zinc plays a central role in enabling a sustainable future.
