Hindustan Zinc Limited has increased the share of renewable energy in its overall power consumption to 22%, up from around 18% in FY26, as the company accelerates its transition towards cleaner energy across its mining and smelting operations. The company is targeting around 70% renewable power consumption by FY28. To support this goal, Hindustan Zinc has increased its round-the-clock renewable power arrangement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW.
The expanded arrangement combines renewable energy generation with storage solutions to provide reliable clean power for the company’s operations. The company expects the additional capacity to steadily increase the contribution of renewable energy to its overall power mix.
Hindustan Zinc generated 892 million units of green power during FY26, compared with 632 million units in FY25. The increase in internal green power generation, along with renewable energy procurement, has helped the company raise the share of clean energy in its electricity consumption.
The company is also working on strengthening its power infrastructure. This includes upgrading connectivity from the state transmission network to the central transmission utility. Hindustan Zinc is also implementing projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and increasing renewable power generation. Among these initiatives are improvements to waste heat recovery boiler steam turbine systems and the development of floating solar installations on water ponds. The company’s renewable energy portfolio includes solar, wind and energy storage solutions.
Amarendu Prakash, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said, “The next chapter of growth in metals and mining will be defined by our ability to produce more with a progressively lower environmental footprint. With renewable power now accounting for 22% of our power consumption and our ambition to take this to 70% by FY28, we are demonstrating that clean energy is not simply a decarbonization lever; it is fundamental to creating a more resilient, competitive and responsible business.”
The clean energy programme forms part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader sustainability strategy and supports its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated pathway towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. The company has continued to strengthen its sustainability initiatives while expanding its position in the metals sector. Hindustan Zinc was recognised as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for the third consecutive year in 2025. It also became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining & Metals in 2025.
A Vedanta Group company, Hindustan Zinc is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and among the top 10 silver producers globally. The company supplies its products to more than 40 countries and holds around 74% of India’s primary zinc market. As the company moves towards a multi-metal growth strategy, renewable energy is expected to remain an important part of its efforts to improve operational efficiency, reduce emissions and support India’s energy transition.
