Hindustan Zinc , the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, is driving one of India’s most ambitious efforts in animal welfare and biodiversity conservation. Since 2016, the company’s animal health and welfare programs have reached more than 8.7 lakh animals, creating a far-reaching impact that blends ecological care with community well-being.
A landmark step in this journey is the ₹5 crore partnership with the Udaipur Forest Department to develop the Baghdarra Crocodile Conservation Reserve. This initiative aims to restore habitats for one of India’s most iconic reptile species through large-scale afforestation—starting with 5,000 saplings—construction of water conservation structures, and the creation of eco-trails to promote responsible nature tourism. The project is expected to benefit over 200 species within the ecosystem while fostering sustainable livelihoods through community-led eco-tourism facilities.
Commenting on the company’s approach, Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said, “Biodiversity protection and animal welfare lie at the core of our sustainability vision. Our initiatives safeguard native and endangered species, improve livestock health, and strengthen rural livelihoods. We believe that environmental conservation and community prosperity are deeply interconnected.”
As part of its broader biodiversity commitment, Hindustan Zinc has established a Peacock Conservation Park at its Kayad Mine in Rajasthan to protect India’s national bird. The company has also created endangered species nurseries at its Kayad and Rampura Agucha mines—India’s largest underground mining operations—to nurture and propagate threatened plant species. These nurseries play a key role in restoring biodiversity and building ecological resilience in mining-affected areas.
To enhance habitats across its operational areas, the company has set up bird nesting and feeding stations, butterfly gardens, and water ponds, creating micro-ecosystems that attract native species, aid pollination, and support water conservation. Together, these small yet impactful efforts demonstrate how industrial sites can evolve into thriving biodiversity zones.
In collaboration with The Animal Care Organization (TACO)—Vedanta Group’s flagship animal welfare initiative—Hindustan Zinc continues to expand its efforts in animal health and protection. Through its Animal Welfare Centre, animal health camps, Lumpy Skin Disease prevention programs, and reflective collar distribution, the company promotes livestock health, reduces disease risks, and equips farmers with tools to enhance productivity—creating a strong link between animal well-being and rural economic stability.
Aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Hindustan Zinc integrates scientific conservation, community engagement, and sustainability into its business practices. This approach demonstrates that industrial growth and ecological preservation can progress hand in hand. By protecting wildlife, restoring habitats, and empowering local communities, Hindustan Zinc continues to set new standards for responsible mining and corporate environmental leadership in India.
