Hindustan Zinc Limited, has launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low carbon ‘green’ zinc. EcoZen is certified as low-carbon zinc and has a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of carbon equivalent per tonne of zinc produced. This zinc is made using renewable energy, making its carbon footprint about 75% lower than the global average.
Zinc is mainly used to protect steel from rusting, which is important for many industries like steel, infrastructure, and automotive. EcoZen will help Hindustan Zinc’s customers offer more sustainable products. By using EcoZen, the carbon emissions can be reduced by about 400 kgs per tonne of steel.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, said the company is focused on sustainability and aims to become Net Zero by 2050. The launch of EcoZen is a big step in this direction. CEO Arun Misra said that EcoZen is a major milestone in their strategy to decarbonize operations and supply chains.
Hindustan Zinc is also increasing its use of renewable energy to reduce its carbon footprint. They recently started getting round-the-clock renewable energy as part of a 450 MW power agreement, in addition to their existing solar power. These efforts have helped reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 14% in FY24 compared to 2020.
Hindustan Zinc supplies to over 40 countries and holds about 75% of the primary zinc market in India. The company is recognized as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company by S&P Global in 2023. They are also committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 and are known for their strong social welfare initiatives.
