Hindalco Industries Ltd the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, announced that its subsidiary Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL) has received Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) certification for the Baphlimali Bauxite Mine in Rayagada district, Odisha. The certification makes Baphlimali the first bauxite mining operation in India to achieve ASI Performance Standard V3.1 certification. It covers activities including mine planning, bauxite mining, onsite crushing and conveyor transportation.

The Baphlimali mines have an annual production capacity of 8.5 million tonnes and supply bauxite to Utkal Alumina’s refinery operations. The mine is an important part of Hindalco’s integrated aluminium production chain. With the certification, Hindalco’s ASI-certified portfolio has increased to 11 operations spanning mining, smelting and downstream manufacturing.

The certified facilities include operations at Mouda, Hirakud FRP, Taloja, Kuppam, Alupuram, Belur, Renukoot, Belagavi, Hirakud and Aditya. Utkal Alumina is one of Hindalco’s major alumina-producing operations, with annual production of approximately 2.67 million tonnes. Baphlimali serves as the primary bauxite source for the refinery.

Kailash Pandey, CEO – Aluminium Upstream, Hindalco Industries, said, “Baphlimali is a strategically important asset for Hindalco and a critical link in our integrated aluminium value chain. The ASI certification reflects our focus on sustainability, transparency and responsible sourcing across our operations. As we extend certification to more upstream facilities, we are strengthening our responsible aluminium value chain from mine to metal.”

Dr Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, said the certification reflects Utkal Alumina and Hindalco’s continued engagement with ASI standards. She added that the growing number of Hindalco operations participating in certification demonstrates the company’s efforts to adopt recognised environmental, social and governance practices across the aluminium value chain.

ASI Performance Standard certification assesses environmental, social and governance practices, including biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, community engagement, human rights, occupational health and safety and responsible business practices. The certification audit was independently conducted by CETIZION Verifica under ASI’s Witness Assessment process, with representatives of the ASI Secretariat observing the audit as part of its quality assurance process.

The certification comes as customers and industries increasingly seek greater transparency and responsible sourcing across global supply chains. Hindalco said the recognition strengthens its commitment to responsible mining and sustainable aluminium production while supporting the development of globally competitive supply chains from India.

Hindalco Industries Limited is the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, with operations spanning bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, downstream rolling, extrusions and foils.
