Hindalco Industries Limited, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has once again been recognized as the world’s most sustainable aluminium company in the 2024 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). With a score of 87 points as of October 30, 2024, Hindalco improved its score by 9 points from last year and outperformed its closest competitor by 22 points. It remains the only aluminium company at the top of the S&P Global CSA rankings.

The DJSI World Index includes the top 10 percent of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index based on sustainability, economics, and ESG factors. Hindalco’s Managing Director, Mr Satish Pai, attributed the company’s success to its continued efforts to elevate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, focusing on goals such as biodiversity preservation, water conservation, zero waste to landfill, and net-zero emissions.

Hindalco achieved a perfect score in numerous ESG areas, including climate strategy, environmental and social reporting, water management, operational eco-efficiency, waste management, resource conservation, cybersecurity, community relations, and employee development. It leads in climate action and emission reduction, recently initiating a 100 MW carbon-free power project for its Odisha smelter—a project that also won the ‘Energy Transition Changemaker’ award at COP28. Since FY 2011-12, Hindalco has reduced its specific greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 19.54% and is working toward sourcing 30% of its energy from renewables by 2030.

In FY24, Hindalco recycled 85% of its operational waste, with three facilities achieving zero-waste to landfill certification in alignment with its target to reach zero-waste to landfill by 2030. Novelis, its U.S.-based subsidiary and the world’s largest aluminium recycler, processed around 2.3 million metric tonnes of recycled aluminium in FY24, significantly reducing emissions.

In the environmental category, Hindalco scored 87 percent, 24 points above its nearest competitor. It also topped the social category with 89 percent, 26 points ahead of its closest peer, and invested ₹154 crore in community initiatives in FY24, positively impacting over 2.5 million people. For governance, Hindalco scored 84 percent, 12 points above its nearest rival, underscoring its commitment to transparency and accountability through its Risk Management and ESG Committee, which oversees sustainability and risk management.

S&P Global’s Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) rank publicly listed companies based on rigorous ESG criteria, including only the most sustainable companies in each industry. With over 10,000 companies assessed globally, the S&P Global CSA is a key benchmark for evaluating economic, environmental, and social performance.
