Greene Tweed has expanded its in-house testing infrastructure with new capabilities for cryogenic leak testing and supercritical carbon dioxide rapid gas decompression testing. The new facilities are designed to support applications in the semiconductor, aerospace, hydrogen and carbon capture sectors.

The company said the investments will help it test and validate sealing materials and solutions under demanding operating conditions while reducing the time required to qualify products for new applications. The new cryogenic leak testing system can evaluate sealing performance at temperatures as low as 4 Kelvin, or minus 269 degrees Celsius. The system operates with a temperature tolerance of plus or minus 0.08 Kelvin.

The facility uses a high-vacuum chamber, specialised thermal shielding and helium leak detection technology. The helium detection system can measure flow rates as low as 5E-12 atm cc per second. The new capability expands Greene Tweed’s internal testing range and allows the company to simulate conditions found in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace and space systems, and liquid hydrogen applications.

Cryogenic applications require materials and sealing systems to perform reliably under extremely low temperatures. Testing under these conditions can help manufacturers understand how materials behave before they are used in critical equipment and systems. Greene Tweed has also added supercritical CO₂ rapid gas decompression, or RGD, testing to support the growing carbon capture, utilization and storage market.

The testing process evaluates materials and sealing solutions under supercritical CO₂ conditions. Tests can be conducted in line with standards such as ISO 23936-2 or under custom conditions of up to 350 degrees Celsius and 5,000 PSI. The company said the new capability can help speed up qualification programmes for equipment used in carbon capture infrastructure. Applications include valves, pipelines, compressors, storage vessels and other systems that operate under demanding pressure and temperature conditions.

Magen Buterbaugh, President and CEO of Greene Tweed, said the expansion of the company’s in-house testing and validation capabilities reflects the changing requirements of its customers and the markets it serves. He said the investment will strengthen Greene Tweed’s ability to work with customers on complex applications and help move products from development to deployment more quickly.

Cory Massey, Senior Manager of Product Engineering and Simulation at Greene Tweed, said new technologies in semiconductors, aerospace, hydrogen and carbon capture are placing greater demands on materials science. The company said its latest investments are aimed at supporting customers working in applications where material and sealing performance is critical. With the addition of cryogenic leak and supercritical CO₂ RGD testing, Greene Tweed is expanding its ability to develop, test and validate solutions for some of the most demanding industrial and technology applications.
