Caterpillar Inc is collaborating with FieldAI to advance the use of artificial intelligence, autonomy and robotics across industrial jobsites and manufacturing facilities. The collaboration comes as industries face labour shortages, rising productivity demands and the need to improve safety in complex working environments. The two companies will combine Caterpillar’s engineering expertise, industry knowledge and operational data with FieldAI’s AI-enabled robotics technology.

The focus will be on physical AI, which uses real-time information from machines and working environments to support decision-making and improve the way people, equipment and facilities operate. Caterpillar said the partnership will help develop practical applications for jobsites and factories where conditions can be complex and constantly changing.

Jaime Mineart, Chief Technology Officer at Caterpillar, said the future of industrial operations will depend on how effectively human knowledge can work alongside AI-powered machines. He said Caterpillar is focused on applying AI to areas where it can improve safety, increase productivity and create greater value for customers.

Earlier this year, Caterpillar outlined its vision for the jobsite of the future, where intelligent machines, connected workflows and digital information work together to make operations safer, more productive and easier to manage. The collaboration with FieldAI will support this vision through the development of new AI-based capabilities for industrial environments.

One of the early applications will be autonomous inspections. AI-powered systems can help monitor equipment and facilities, improving operational visibility while reducing the need for people to enter potentially hazardous areas. The companies are also exploring the use of digital twins for jobsites and facilities. These digital models can provide real-time information about equipment, infrastructure and ongoing operations.

Another area of focus is situational awareness. AI systems can analyse information from industrial environments and help identify potential risks at an earlier stage, allowing teams to make faster and better-informed decisions. The collaboration will also examine operational optimisation using simulation, automation and AI-generated insights to improve efficiency.

John Tuntland, Senior Vice President of Caterpillar’s Integrated Components Division, said modern manufacturing is changing the way the company works, from design through production and delivery. He said advanced technology can give teams better visibility into facility operations and help identify opportunities to improve safety, production flow and decision-making.

FieldAI was selected for its ability to deploy AI and robotics systems in complex industrial environments where traditional automation can face limitations. Its robot-agnostic technology can process large amounts of operational and jobsite information and convert it into useful insights. Through the collaboration, Caterpillar and FieldAI aim to accelerate the development of industrial AI solutions that can support safer operations, higher productivity and more efficient use of machines and resources across jobsites and manufacturing facilities.

For more than 100 years, Caterpillar has been helping build a stronger and more sustainable world. With sales and revenues of $67.6 billion in 2025, Caterpillar Inc. is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.

The company operates through three main business segments: Power & Energy, Construction Industries and Resource Industries. Caterpillar combines advanced technology, engineering expertise and a skilled global workforce to help customers address complex challenges across industries.

Caterpillar is supported by one of the world’s largest independent dealer networks, providing customers with products, services and support across global markets. Through Cat Financial, the company also offers financing solutions to support customers and dealers.

With a strong focus on innovation, technology and sustainable growth, Caterpillar continues to develop solutions that improve productivity, efficiency and performance across construction, mining, energy, transportation and other industries. FieldAI develops advanced autonomous software for robots operating in complex and unpredictable environments. The company’s technology acts as a common intelligence system that can work across different types of robots and perform a wide range of tasks.

FieldAI’s Field Foundation Models combine data-driven artificial intelligence with physics-based reasoning and uncertainty awareness. This helps robots operate safely and reliably in environments that have traditionally been difficult for automated systems. The company focuses on deploying general-purpose robots in real-world, unstructured environments where conditions can change quickly and tasks may be difficult to predict.

FieldAI’s leadership team brings experience in artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced technology. Its team includes professionals with backgrounds at organisations and programmes such as Google DeepMind, NASA JPL’s Mars exploration programme, DARPA’s Subterranean Challenge and RACER programmes.

FieldAI has raised more than $400 million from a group of global investors, including Bezos Expeditions, Emerson Collective, Khosla Ventures, Canaan Partners, NVentures, Prysm Capital and Temasek. Through its work in robotics and autonomous systems, FieldAI aims to expand the use of intelligent machines across industries and enable safer and more reliable operations in challenging real-world environments.
