Grasim Industries Ltd, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has inaugurated its fourth decorative paints manufacturing facility under the Birla Opus brand in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka. Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla unveiled the fully automated plant on November 19. With this addition, Birla Opus now boasts a total production capacity of 866 million litres per annum (MLPA), positioning it as India’s second-largest decorative paints manufacturer by installed capacity.
The Chamarajanagar facility features an annual capacity of 180 MLPA for water-based paints, 20 MLPA for distempers, and 30 MLPA for solvent-based paints, including wood finishes. The plant leverages advanced in-house technology, such as unique polymer synthesis for water-based paints, offering enhanced properties like multi-stain resistance, dirt resistance, and crack-bridging. Solvent-based paints utilize in-house resins designed for superior durability, corrosion resistance, and faster drying.
Sustainability is a core aspect of the plant, which operates with zero liquid discharge and incorporates fourth-generation manufacturing technology for a seamless supply chain, zero defects, and complete product traceability. This milestone aligns with Birla Opus’s broader plan to establish six plants with a combined capacity of 1,332 MLPA at an investment of ₹10,000 crore, with ₹8,470 crore already spent.
Commenting on the achievement, Kumar Mangalam Birla said, “Our paints business embodies a confident and aspirational India. The journey so far has been impactful, and we remain on track to achieve our revenue target of ₹10,000 crore within the first three years of full-scale operations.”
Himanshu Kapania, Director at Aditya Birla Group, added, “With four of our six advanced plants now operational in Panipat, Ludhiana, Cheyyar, and Chamarajanagar, we are well-positioned to meet rising market demand with robust supply capabilities.”
