GE Vernova has announced the launch of PlanOS, a comprehensive software suite designed to support energy planners, utilities, and regulators with an integrated system planning platform for a more efficient and resilient grid. Developed from decades of modeling expertise and in partnership with system operators worldwide, PlanOS offers a modular yet fully integrated environment that enables faster planning cycles and more informed decision-making.

As energy systems become more complex and the transition to renewable sources accelerates, the demand for smarter and more adaptive planning tools has grown. Existing planning tools are often fragmented and slow to respond to challenges such as renewable integration, electrification, and decarbonization. PlanOS is designed to address these challenges by offering a unified and dynamic planning solution.

“Grid planners are navigating unprecedented levels of complexity, with evolving demands for reliability, resilience, and cost efficiency,” said Jim Walsh, Vice President, GE Vernova Consulting Services. “PlanOS equips planners with a cohesive environment to simulate scenarios, refine strategies, and make decisions with confidence.”

PlanOS is built on four advanced simulation engines that operate on a unified data architecture, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and seamless integration across planning functions. Together, they enable utilities, regulators, and planners to evaluate system performance, reliability, and investment pathways with confidence.

The Power Flow engine provides high-fidelity steady-state and dynamic analysis. It supports tasks such as contingency planning, transmission studies, and interconnection analysis, helping planners model grid behavior under both normal and stressed conditions.

The Resource Adequacy engine delivers precise reliability assessments by factoring in weather variability, planned and unplanned outages, and grid constraints. This ensures stakeholders can anticipate risks and maintain stable operations across a wide range of scenarios.

The Production Cost and Capacity Expansion engines connect operational planning with long-term strategy. The Production Cost engine runs fast, flexible simulations that link investment planning to real-world dispatch and emissions outcomes, while the Capacity Expansion engine uses optimization to test policy, technology, and demand scenarios. Together, they guide robust, future-ready investment decisions.

These engines work together within a single environment, allowing users to perform interconnected studies with a shared dataset. This unified approach streamlines workflows and significantly reduces the time needed to gain insights.

PlanOS is designed for high-performance computing, enabling results to be delivered much faster than traditional tools. With open APIs, scripting support, and a flexible architecture, it adapts to the diverse needs of planners across various regions and market conditions.

“We didn’t start by building software; we began by solving real-world planning challenges,” said Gagan Porwal, Global Head of Software and Operations, GE Vernova Consulting Services. “PlanOS is the result of years of experience and collaboration with planners around the world. It’s built for the field – by planners, for planners.”
