GAIL (India) Ltd., has announced the establishment of an ethane cracker project in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district. The ambitious project, valued at Rs 60,000 crore, marks a significant investment in the region’s industrial development.
The ethane cracker project will be constructed on a sprawling 800 hectares of land provided by the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC). According to an exchange filing, the state government has already initiated the process to allocate the land for this massive venture.
The project, designed with a capacity of 1,500 kilotonnes per annum (KTA), will play a crucial role in enhancing India’s petrochemical infrastructure. GAIL has requested the government to offer suitable enablers to facilitate the project’s progress. Once these enablers are in place, GAIL will seek board approval to advance the project. The company has yet to disclose the financing details for the project.
This initiative follows GAIL’s recent commissioning of its maiden green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, earlier this month. The Vijaipur plant, producing approximately 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day with a purity of 99.99% by volume, represents GAIL’s entry into new and alternative energy sectors. The green hydrogen is generated using electricity from renewable sources, such as solar energy, to split water molecules.
The ethane cracker project is expected to bolster the state’s industrial landscape, creating numerous job opportunities and fostering economic growth. The venture aligns with India’s broader strategy to boost domestic production of petrochemicals and reduce dependency on imports.
The announcement of the ethane cracker project was met with enthusiasm from local officials and industry stakeholders. It signifies a substantial step forward in Madhya Pradesh’s industrial and economic development, reinforcing GAIL’s commitment to advancing India’s energy and industrial sectors.
