GAIL (India) Ltd, the nation’s largest natural gas transmission and distribution company, has marked a significant milestone with the commissioning of its first green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh. This inaugural venture into green hydrogen signifies GAIL’s commitment to new and alternative energy sources.

The plant was inaugurated by Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, during a ceremonious event. The inauguration was attended by GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Sandeep Gupta, Director (Projects) Deepak Gupta, Director (Human Resources) Ayush Gupta, and other senior officials.

“This Green Hydrogen plant has a capacity of producing 4.3 TPD (tons per day) of hydrogen through 10 MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzer units, utilizing renewable power to electrolyze water. The hydrogen produced will have a purity of 99.999% (by volume) and will be generated at a pressure of 30 Kg/cm²,” stated a company spokesperson.

Initially, the hydrogen produced at the Vijaipur facility will be used as fuel in conjunction with natural gas for various processes and equipment within the existing plant. The future plans include dispensing this hydrogen to retail customers in nearby areas, transported through high-pressure cascades.

To support the green hydrogen production, GAIL is sourcing renewable power through open access and is also in the process of establishing around 20 MW of solar power capacity at Vijaipur, including both ground-mounted and floating solar installations.

The inauguration of this plant is a major step forward in GAIL’s strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and contribute to the country’s renewable energy targets. “This initiative aligns with our vision of adopting sustainable and clean energy solutions. The green hydrogen plant not only represents a technological advancement but also a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a greener future,” said Sandeep Gupta, CMD of GAIL.

The establishment of the 10 MW green hydrogen plant underscores GAIL’s proactive approach in exploring and investing in innovative energy solutions, reinforcing its position as a leader in the energy sector. As the company continues to expand its renewable energy initiatives, this project stands as a testament to its dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
