FEV and Mahindra have co-developed a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system designed specifically for Mahindra’s Electric Origin SUV lineup. The system, offered in 59 kWh and 79 kWh configurations, has undergone rigorous testing and meets multiple global safety and performance standards.
Developed over a two-year period, the battery system was tested under a variety of extreme conditions, including fire exposure, nail penetration, and vehicle rollover. It successfully passed international certifications, including IEC, ISO, UL, SAE, and AIS standards, with particular focus on AIS requirements relevant to the Indian automotive sector.
One of the system’s standout features is its fast-charging capability, enabling a 20% to 80% charge in just 20 minutes. By leveraging combined engineering resources, the partnership significantly reduced development time and cost while achieving a system that balances high energy density with robust safety performance.
Testing was conducted at Mahindra’s research centers in India and at FEV’s eDLP facility near Leipzig, Germany—recognized as the largest independent testing site for high-voltage batteries worldwide. This dual-location approach ensured alignment with both regional and international requirements.
According to Dr. Thomas Hülshorst, Global Vice President Electric Powertrain at FEV, the development process produced a solution that not only fits the unique needs of India’s market conditions but also outperforms global safety benchmarks.
Following a presale launch in February, the battery system is now entering full-scale production. Both companies have confirmed plans to continue their partnership, aiming to introduce additional high-performance battery solutions for electric vehicles.
The collaboration combines FEV’s global engineering capabilities with Mahindra’s strong market position in India. FEV operates with 7,000 employees across 40 global locations. Mahindra, with a workforce of 260,000 in over 100 countries, is a market leader in India’s utility vehicle, farm equipment, and technology sectors.
The launch of this battery system reflects broader trends in the automotive industry, where energy storage, safety, and local-market adaptability are increasingly essential for sustainable electric vehicle growth.
