esmo group Introduces X-change Cart to Streamline Semiconductor Test Operations

manufacturing-news

The esmo group has unveiled its latest innovation, the X-change Cart, a semi-automated system designed to simplify and accelerate Device Interface Board (DIB) exchange processes in semiconductor test environments. The new solution enables a single operator to complete a full load board changeover in less than one minute, addressing long-standing challenges in safety, efficiency, and operational consistency.

Frequent load board changes are a defining feature of high-mix semiconductor testing. Traditionally reliant on manual handling, these processes often result in extended downtime, physical strain on operators, and increased risk of damage to sensitive and costly components. The X-change Cart has been developed specifically to eliminate these inefficiencies while improving reliability on the production floor.

Josef Weinberger, Head of Business Unit for esmo semicon, highlighted the motivation behind the innovation, noting that manual board handling often introduces variability and slows operations. He emphasized that the new system standardizes the process, allowing operators to execute fast, repeatable exchanges regardless of workspace constraints.

The X-change Cart incorporates an intuitive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) that guides operators through a structured sequence of locking, rotating, and transferring boards. Its design allows for the transport of two boards simultaneously, significantly reducing turnaround time. Advanced rotation capabilities, including ±180° at the locking mechanism and ±90° tower swivel, ensure flexibility in tight or complex layouts commonly found in semiconductor test facilities.

Engineered for compatibility, the system integrates seamlessly with major Automated Test Equipment (ATE) platforms, enabling adoption without the need for extensive reconfiguration. This ensures minimal disruption for outsourced semiconductor assembly and test providers (OSATs) and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs).

The X-change Cart also supports future automation goals. An optional configuration allows the system to be mounted on autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) or autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), providing a scalable pathway toward fully automated test floor operations. Its modular architecture enables additional features to be incorporated as operational demands evolve.

Designed with precision and durability in mind, the system includes an ESD-safe gripper to protect sensitive boards, along with integrated sensors and safety mechanisms to ensure consistent performance under real production conditions. The X-change Cart will be showcased at SEMICON Southeast Asia 2026 at Booth 2145, Hall 8, Level 2, MITEC, offering attendees a firsthand look at its capabilities.
