Equinix, Inc, a global leader in digital infrastructure, has inaugurated its first International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center in Chennai, India — CN1. The facility, located on a six-acre site in Siruseri, Tamil Nadu, is strategically connected to Equinix’s Mumbai campus of three IBX data centers. This new addition reinforces India’s position as a key growth market for global enterprises seeking to expand digital services, support AI-driven innovation, and deliver low-latency experiences to users across the region.
India’s rapidly growing digital economy, strong data sovereignty framework, and increasing cloud adoption have made it a critical destination for technology investments. With Chennai emerging as a hub for innovation, AI research, and enterprise digitalization, CN1 will play a vital role in enabling businesses to scale their computing power and meet the demand for high-performance data processing capabilities.
Equinix has invested US$69 million in the first phase of CN1, which will initially offer 800 cabinets, with an eventual capacity of 4,250 cabinets. Built for 99.999% uptime reliability, the facility features Equinix Fabric® for hybrid multicloud connectivity and is designed to support liquid cooling systems required for AI and high-density workloads.
The company currently supports more than 300 businesses in India, including network providers and five internet exchanges. Its Mumbai data centers already host a comprehensive cloud ecosystem, including direct on-ramps to major cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. With CN1, Chennai customers will gain secure, low-latency access to these digital ecosystems and seamless interconnection with partners and service providers.
“We are thrilled to announce CN1, which extends Equinix’s global interconnection ecosystem to Tamil Nadu,” said Manoj Paul, Managing Director, Equinix India. “This milestone strengthens our commitment to enabling businesses in Chennai and across India to build scalable, sustainable, and future-ready digital infrastructure that supports their growth ambitions.
