Emcure Pharmaceuticals has announced a significant price reduction for its weight management therapy Poviztra® (semaglutide injection), lowering the starting cost by 55% to Rs 3,999 per month for four weekly doses. The revised pricing takes effect immediately across India.
Poviztra® is a once-weekly injectable therapy delivered through a user-friendly pen device designed for accurate dosing and ease of administration. The treatment is available in multiple strengths, including 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg, and a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, allowing physicians to tailor therapy based on patient needs.
As the first Indian company to exclusively distribute and commercialise this formulation of semaglutide for obesity management, Emcure aims to broaden patient access to a clinically established therapy. The revised pricing is expected to make the treatment more affordable for a significantly larger population at a time when obesity-related conditions are rising sharply across the country.
Semaglutide, a biologic molecule developed using recombinant DNA technology, has been widely studied and used globally for nearly a decade. It is supported by extensive clinical research and real-world evidence, with millions of patients benefiting from its use worldwide.
Satish Mehta, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, said the move reflects the company’s commitment to improving access to scientifically validated therapies. He noted that India faces a growing burden of obesity, with hundreds of millions affected by generalised and abdominal obesity, making access to effective treatment options increasingly important.
Obesity is associated with a wide range of health risks, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, and other chronic conditions. Expanding access to proven therapies is seen as a key step in addressing this public health challenge.
