The defence ministry is likely to approve a massive Rs 70,000-crore order for new warships. These advanced stealth frigates will continue the Nilgiri class currently being built in India. It is reported that Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) are the top choices for this project, known as Project 17B.

MDL and GRSE are already working on similar projects under Project 17A. MDL is building four frigates, while GRSE is working on three. The new order might be split between these two shipyards to speed up delivery times, just like in Project 17A.

The new warships will include many Indian-made parts like fire control systems, Brahmos cruise missiles, anti-submarine weapons, and advanced electronic warfare systems. This order will also benefit many sub-suppliers and vendors through subcontracting.

MDL, one of India’s leading shipyards, has a strong order book with projects like the Kalvari class submarines and Project 15B class destroyers. It is also close to signing a contract for three more Kalvari class submarines, worth about Rs 35,000 crore. These new submarines will be more advanced than the current six Kalvari class submarines built by MDL.

GRSE, located in Kolkata, is working on next-generation offshore patrol vessels and anti-submarine warfare corvettes. It has also secured significant export orders, highlighting its growing role in the global maritime industry.
