Coal India Limited (CIL) is reinforcing its commitment to consistent and transparent coal quality by significantly expanding the use of mechanised loading systems integrated with automated coal sampling technology. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to improve domestic coal supply reliability while reducing quality-related concerns among consumers.

CIL is progressively increasing coal dispatches through silo-based mechanised loading systems equipped with automatic mechanical samplers. These systems eliminate manual handling during loading, ensuring uniform sampling and minimizing human intervention. As a result, coal quality determination becomes more accurate, credible, and consistent across dispatch points.

In line with the provisions of the Fuel Supply Agreement, coal quality assessment is conducted through independent Third Party Sampling Agencies (TPSAs). Currently, 11 agencies empanelled by Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFCL) are deployed at loading points operated by CIL’s subsidiary companies. Consumers are given the flexibility to choose any of the PFCL-approved agencies for sampling and analysis, ensuring impartiality and transparency in grade assessment.

Up to December of FY 2026, CIL dispatched approximately 375 million tonnes of coal through rail mode, all of which underwent sampling by TPSAs. Nearly half of this volume was loaded through silos where automated samplers were operational. Encouraged by the improvement in quality outcomes, CIL is now targeting to raise silo-based dispatches to nearly 80% during the current financial year. This is being supported through the accelerated commissioning of first-mile connectivity projects and the expansion of silo infrastructure across mining areas.

Coal quality conformity, based on sampling data provided by TPSAs and referee laboratories, has shown a steady improvement. Overall grade conformity reached 85% as of December this fiscal year, compared to 82% during the corresponding period last year. CIL expects further improvement as mechanised systems are expanded across more dispatch locations.

To further strengthen transparency, CIL has also initiated online coal quality analysis at two of its subsidiary companies, enabling near real-time quality assessment. While Indian coal is inherently heterogeneous—often showing grade variation even within the same seam—CIL continues to leverage technology to enhance accuracy, accountability, and consumer confidence in coal quality determination.

Coal India Limited, headquartered in Kolkata, is the world’s largest coal producer and a Maharatna Public Sector Enterprise under the Government of India. Established in 1975, CIL operates through its eight subsidiaries spread across major coal-bearing regions of the country.

The company plays a vital role in meeting India’s energy needs, accounting for over 80% of the nation’s domestic coal production. With a focus on sustainable mining practices, technological modernization, and enhanced logistics, Coal India continues to support the country’s energy security while working towards greater efficiency and environmental responsibility.
