The Confederation of Indian Industry’s Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), India’s leading organisation promoting sustainable construction, has announced a change in its national leadership effective 1 April 2026.
C Shekar Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director of CSR Estates Ltd., currently National Vice-Chairman of IGBC, will take over as National Chairman, succeeding B Thiagarajan, whose two-year tenure concludes. AR Unnikrishnan, Managing Director – Glass Business at Saint-Gobain India Pvt Ltd, will assume office as National Vice-Chairman.
Since its establishment in 2001, IGBC has grown into India’s foremost green building certification body, with more than 18,850 registered projects covering over 15.52 billion sq. ft. across residential, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors. The council has developed 33 rating systems for green and net-zero projects and represents India in the World Green Building Council.
Mr Reddy said India’s rapid growth presents an opportunity to create infrastructure that is both economically strong and environmentally responsible. He highlighted priorities such as accelerating retrofits of existing buildings, expanding affordable certification options for MSMEs, and promoting technology-driven sustainable design.
Mr Unnikrishnan noted that sustainable building materials and energy-efficient technologies will be essential in reducing emissions and improving resource efficiency. He emphasised IGBC’s role in bringing together industry, policymakers and innovators to drive practical solutions.
Outgoing Chairman Mr. Thiagarajan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead IGBC during a period of expansion and said the new leadership would guide the council into its next phase of growth. The transition reflects IGBC’s continued commitment to advancing green buildings and supporting India’s long-term sustainability goals.
Founded by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2001, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) was created to drive the green building movement across India. With 32 chapters nationwide, IGBC brings together key stakeholders from the construction sector, including corporates, government and nodal agencies, architects, product manufacturers, and academic institutions. The Council also collaborates with governments, the World Green Building Council, and various bilateral and multilateral organizations to advance green building practices in the country.
Today, the movement has gained significant momentum, with more than 15.52 billion sq. ft. of registered green building footprint and over 18,850 projects adopting IGBC’s 33 Green and Net Zero rating systems. As a result, India has emerged as one of the global leaders in sustainable built environments, with IGBC maintaining a dominant market presence—around 90% of India’s green building projects follow IGBC’s Green and Net Zero Rating Systems.
