The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), India’s leading Telecom R&D organization under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has entered into a partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) to develop an “Optical Transceiver Chipset for High-Bandwidth 6G Wireless Links.”

This collaboration is part of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) 6G Call for Proposals, initiated by the Department of Telecommunications, aiming to accelerate research and innovation in the 6G ecosystem. The project focuses on the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030, with a strong emphasis on affordability, sustainability, and wide accessibility.

The goal of the initiative is to create chipsets that support high-bandwidth free-space coherent optical links, which will be crucial for 6G applications. These links are intended to provide high-speed connectivity in rural and difficult-to-access regions, where traditional optical fiber deployment is not feasible. Additionally, the project aims to enable uninterrupted, high-bandwidth communication links to remote areas through satellite technology.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony attended by Dr Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, Prof Shalabh Gupta, the principal investigator from IIT Bombay, and C-DOT Directors Dr Pankaj Kumar Dalela and Ms. Shikha Srivastava.

Speaking at the event, Dr Rajkumar Upadhyay emphasized the importance of developing indigenous technologies to meet India’s diverse communication needs and reiterated C-DOT’s commitment to advancing the vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and India’s 6G future.

Prof Shalabh Gupta expressed appreciation for the collaboration, noting that the partnership will enhance research capabilities and infrastructure within the telecom sector, helping to push the boundaries of 6G technology development.
